HARRIERS REPORT TO 6 OCTOBER 2019

Ironman 70.3 Weymouth.

On 22 September in tough windy conditions Marcus Wills completed his Triathlon Season with the Ironman Weymouth race. The event starts starts with a 1.2 mile open sea swim around Weymouth Bay made difficult by the choppy waves. Following on from this a 56 mile cycle race and then on to complete a tough Half Marathon. Marcus posted a very fine 5h 36m.

Atlantic Coastal Challenge.

Over the 4th, 5th and 6th of October it was the 14th running of the Atlantic Coast Challenge from Padstow to Lands End on the very challenging North Cornwall Coast. The race is essentially 3 marathons back to back although the final day was actually an ultra marathon. The competitors are taken by bus to the start each day & collected at the end of the day. Mel Handford bravely took on this tough race and produced an outstanding performance a great credit to her and the Harriers bearing in mind the difficult nature of the trails and climbs & technical descents. A total time of 15h 55minutes put Mel in 12 th place overall and 3rd female finisher. Superb determination.

London Ultra 55 km race.

On October 5th Sharon Daw lined up to tackle a unique new race – the London 55km ultra starting at the entrance to the Woolwich foot tunnel and finishing in Richmond – crossing 9 London Boroughs – ascending London's two highest points Shooters Hill and Crystal Palace and run mostly off road. Taking in Wimbledon Common & Richmond Park the race provided many access points for supporters – using the southern part of the Capital Ring. Sharon came home in 6h 2m a fine performance.

Plymouth Ocean City 10k.

Sunday 6th October saw 10 Harriers make the short trip into Plymouth for the Ocean City 5k and 10 k. In the 5 k race Ben Harding sprinted around in a very fast 21m4secs.

The 10 k race saw Darren Harvey as 1st harrier in 38m 27sec followed by David Robinson in 39m 48sec and Marcus Wills in 41m 3 sec. Aimee Turpee was 4th Harrier and 1st lady Harrier in 47m 52sec. Gemma Woolfe 55m 14 secs was next just ahead of Liz Egginton 58m 4 secs. A clutch of Harriers led by Sam Snell 59.24, Gail Cory 59m 49 secs and Sandra Haynes 59m 56 secs all beat the magic 60 mins for the 6.2 miles – very fine running by the ladies.
