EAST CORNWALL HARRIERS RACE REPORT 4 NOVEMBER 2019.

The CORNISH Final Race Cornish Grand Prix.

Sunday 3rd November was the Cornish , the final race in the 2019 Cornwall Road Running Grand Prix and one of the two races hosted by East Cornwall Harriers. This final race decides the overall Grand Prix league table positions.

After a week of very heavy rain the Fowey Valley was severely flooded for a long section when inspected the night before the Marathon and the Race Director took the decision to reroute the race to enable it to go ahead. The safety of runners and marshalls takes priority in every road running race but also cancellation would mean that the 400 runners who had run 1000's of miles in training would have been very disappointed. The re-routing entailed making the event an “out and back race” with the runners turning for home just after Dozmary Pool & retracing the route back to Pensilva. This made the race a little more hilly but surprisingly most of the runners enjoyed the change.

In the event the route proved to be not the only challenge on the day. When the runners set off from Pensilva the bright sunny sky quickly became overcast and turned to rain with a big drop in temperature as the runners headed out to Golitha Falls. As the runners headed up onto the moor the rain became torrential with a cold biting wind and was very miserable as the runners passed Colliford Lake. Notwithstanding this, most runners completed the race in some excellent times.

The race was won by Stuart Nicholas from St Austell Running Club in 2.47.26 with Oli Jones from the Harriers in 2nd place in 2 .51.42.. Dean Harris from Chineham Park Running Club was third in 2.57.06. For the ladies, first home for Looe Pioneers was Jo Robinson in a brilliant 3.18.50.Second lady was Carly Kendall from St.Austell Running Club in 3.34.03 and third lady was Harrier Kaye Patterson in 3.35.45. Amazing race times for them all.

Harriers results in full were 1st Harrier Oli Jones 2.47.51 2nd overall and 1st MV 45-49. Doug Stacey 3.08.51 was 2nd Harrier home and 3rd MV 40 – brilliant running. Darren Harvey 3.16.02 4th MV 40 just edged Dave Philp 3.18.23 who was 1st MV 55. Patrick Munn returning to excellent form after injury was 2nd MV 55 in 3.21.39. Chris Ullman posted a brilliant 3.35.27 just ahead of Kaye Patterson 3.35.45 2nd overall and 2 in age category. Diane Roy 3.43.15 was 1st in her FV55 age category and as usual still smiling as she crossed the line. Clive Shute in his 26th marathon posted 3.46.39 just ahead of Joe Kearns 3.47.37 and 6th in his MV 55 age group. Julie Frith 3.56.50 had an excellent run comfortably under 4 hours in her first ever marathon. Amy Williams 4.02.20 smashed her previous best marathon time by an amazing 50 minutes a remarkable run – especially in the conditions. Sharon Daw running marathon 333 had an excellent run finishing in 4.03.34. and 3rd FV 50. James Lockyer posted 4.24.17 despite suffering a nagging knee injury. Craig Vaughnley 4.26.05 was next Harrier home ahead of the amazing Ray Goodright 4.32.33 who was 3rd in his MV 70 age group in a brilliant time. Rachael Young finished in 4.43.09 another solid performance. Steve Walsh 4.53.15 just piiped Lucy Oldham 4.54.22 by 67 seconds. Lyndsey Saunders 5.04.42 put in another resolute run finishing just ahead of Srah steed 5.05.45 and Paul kelsey 5.05.47. Nikki Pritchard again concentrated on the task in hand and finished in 5.10.07. Alex Putna 5.30.00 completed the field for the Harriers.

Our Ladies team of Kaye Patterson, Diane Roy,Julie Frith and Amy Williams, won the ladies team prize, a very good effort.

Our mens team of Oli Jones, Doug Stacey,Darren Harvey and Dave Philp were 2nd male team another good result.

East Cornwall Harriers would like to thank the runners for bravely turning up and performing so well in the adverse conditions and also the volunteer Race Marshalls and Safety crew who not only ensured the runners were safe but encouraged them all the way. Without volunteers there are no races – so again many thanks. More information and personal comments are on the East Cornwall Harriers Supporters Facebook page as well as many photos.
