EAST CORNWALL HARRIERS MARATHON REPORT 19 NOVEMBER 2017.

Sunday 19th November 2017 saw the 33 rd running of the Cornish Marathon and the 30th hosted by East Cornwall Harriers. The race was originally run from Saltash to Lostwithiel & started as a bet between 2 runners. Obviously it would be impossible to run that route now.

The race starts at Millenium House Pensilva & heads out to Jamaica Inn via Tokenbury Corner, Darite , Golitha Falls & then at Jamaica Inn turns to return via the Draynes Valley to Golitha Falls before returning to Pensilva through Darite & Crows Nest.

As well as stunning scenery on Bodmin Moor there are some very tough hills which provide a real test of stamina for the runners especially between mile 24 & 25.

This year again several memorable moments. Last year Oliver Jones & Mark Davidson ran 2 laps of the course 52.4 miles to raise money for Cancer Charities. This year Oliver deservedly won the race . Special mention to Janna Eyre and her supporting runner Laura Milward from Carn Runners who ran the whole race wearing a very heavy awkward Pasty Costume in order to raise money & awareness for Prostate Cancer – the UK's single biggest cancer mortality risk. Not only did Janna complete the race – but in an amazing time of 5h 20m. A Herculean effort. Also in the race was the legendary marathon man Danny Kay – the 76 yrs young man running his 706 th Marathon & finishing in 4h 46m also just winning his class 75 -79. Special mention to Harrier Sharon Daw – running her 160th Marathon and being part of the ladies winning team.

The race started quickly and after 2 miles around Pensilva headed out to wards Golitha Falls. After 3 miles Oliver Jones was out in the lead & never looked back to finish first in 2.52.49 a PB for this course ahead of Birchfield Harrier Peter Dimbleby 2.57.29. Chris Gilbert was 2nd Harrier & 4th Overall and 3rd in age category in 3h .00.22. The brilliant Isobel Wykes from Truro Running was 9th finisher overall and 1st lady in 3.12.45.

David Philip had a brilliant outing to finish as 3rd Harrier in 3.18.53 b& 1st in his age group. Terry Leech 3.30.43 had an excellent run to finish as 4th Harrier 1st in his age category & part of the team that achieved 2nd place over all.

Paul Arrowmith 3.31.13 finished very fast despite suffering a bout of cramp. Clive Shute 3.34.02 was more than pleased with his excellent performance.

Diane Roy 3.38.09 was 1st lady Harrier and Jon Tourell Harris 3.39.42 close on her heels as 7th & 8th Harriers. Stuart Timms 3.43.24 also a PB & Helen Morse 3.43 27 were next to finish with Helen 2nd female Harrier & a very fine 3rd in Female under 35. age category.. Kaye Patterson 3.45.49 was 5th in her age category and 3rd lady Harrier. Joe Kearns 3.47.25 a very fine 5th in age category after another consistent run. Ben Harding 3.56.00 a great run to finish well within 4 hours. Sharon Daw 4.01.47 4th lady Harrier & the 4th member of the Harriers winning ladies team. Hayley Stacey 4.03.12 exceeded her expectations with a great run. Tracey Brown 4.06.59 with a solid performance. Club Chairman Mark Andrews 4.26.11 finished just 2m 7 secs in front of Craig Vaughnley who smashed his personal best by some 55 minutes – totally amazing.

Emma Handley 4.29.02 and Rachael Young 4.31.56 were the next finishers just ahead of Ray Goodright 4.33.52 who deservedly was 1st in the MV 70- 74 class. .

Andrew Sims 4.38.55 just headed off the trio of Leza wall 4.44.30, Natasha Duffey 4.44.30 and Lisa Webb 4.44.46 – superb running from this group. Lucy Oldham 4.49.08 beat the % hr target time . Dave Lean who ran in a Cornish Kilt and Jon Quelch finished together in 5.02.06.

Steve Beazley 5.13.09 was another Harrier to post a PB by some 15 minutes. Karen Sims 5.14.54 completed the team.

This year 30 Harriers completed the race which is the highest recorded number.

The mens team of Oli Jones, Chris Gilbert David Philp & Terry Leech were second and the Ladies team of Diane Roy, Helen Morse, Kaye Patterson & Sharon Daw were first. Our 2nd ladies team of Hayley Stacey,Tracey Brown,Emma Handley and Rachael Young were 4th.

The club thanks the support of all the Running Clubs who sent runners & provided support especially our friends at Looe Pioneers who sent 16 runners and helped us by providing marshalls.

Thanks to the official time keepers , the baggage help – scouts at the best organised Water Stations , Rob Pick the Race Director & Louise Hawkins ..
