A message from the Chairman

01 August 2018
Written by: CHRIS ULLMAN

Incredibly, it has now been four months since I was elevated to the dizzy heights of your club chairman. As has traditionally been the case there is no committee meeting in August, so that gives an opportunity to review progress so far and look forward to the rest of the year.

During the first third of the year, every member of the new committee and all the coaches have made a tremendous effort to try and improve the whole club experience and to push the ethos of 'one club' and 'inclusion'.

Some of the developments of which not everyone may be aware or have forgotten (in no particular order) are ;

The AGM. This has never really been that much fun! So for next year it will be an 'AGM and Awards Presentation Evening'. The AGM itself will aim to get the main business done as quickly as possible followed by the Awards Presentation then buffet, so that it becomes more of a social evening.

This year the club is paying UKAA fees for every member who wishes it this is intended to encourage everyone to try one of the fabulous events that are put on by the running community in our area, yes they may be called races but they are fabulous social events where you will meet hundreds of like-minded individuals out there to have fun. Forget all those front runners who are out to win things. Just come and have a great time at the back with me.

Thursday evening sessions to encourage inclusivity both the 5 and 8 mile sessions are now single groups for everyone, and this has worked well so don't be put off a Thursday because you think youaren't fast enough.

Club kit items – Our new kit officer Hayley has done loads work and there will be news soon of a club subsidised item, possibly a hi-viz lightweight wind/shower proof jacket that we can all wear on training sessions that will show our club identify, keep us dry and safe. There will be lots of other new kit as well – so keep an eye out.

The first social event subsidised by the club and inclusive to all members was the Midsummer run and buffet, organised by Lucy Smale and her team. It was a great evening, and Lucy is always open to other ideas.

As you will know we now have a ‘Harrier of the Month’ and the eclectic bunch of worthy winners so far show just how much is going on.

Soon we have the club handicap to look forward to. Again the aim is for this to be fully inclusive. You can race with a handicap, run for fun as an individual or as a group – running fast is not necessarily the aim! Best of all will be the (again subsidised) curry and drinks afterwards. Please make every effort to make it the biggest and best ever – this year it is on a Wednesday – 5th September.

Another new initiative is the ‘Plogging’ evening. This is where as a club we can raise our profile in a positive way locally. An evening where everyone can make a contribution, walk, jog, run it doesn’t matter.

Finally, please can I appeal to everyone to contact me or anyone else on the committee (details on the website) with anything they would like raise – praise, moans, ideas – you don’t have to wait for the AGM to do so.

Enjoy your running.
