ECH Race Report 10 September 2018

Two important club events last week.

On Wednesday 5 September was the annual Club Handicap race. The 5 mile race was run around the lanes of Merrymeet with projected race times based on races already completed this year. The winner of the ladies race was Aimee Turpee and the mens race was won by John Sudell. The race was followed by a very pleasant Curry Night at the Village Inn Rosecraddoc.

On Thursday 6 September the club carried out its first Plogging Event a training run combined with picking up litter along the route. This activity originated in Sweden in 2016 and the name Plogging derived from the Swedish for pick up “Plocka Upp “ 15 harriers took part and collected 15 black bags of litter mostly plastic.

Saturday 8 September saw intrepid Marathon Runner Sharon Daw take on the Crafty Fox Marathon sponsored by White Star Running at Ansty near Dorchester. It turned out to be a very tough race. Sharon came home in 5h 34m 27 secs. On Sunday 9 September Sharon moved on to Farnham to compete in the Farnham Pilgrim Marathon. Sharon finished in 5h 3 min 21 secs. This was race nr 86 in Sharon's attempt to run 100 marathons in 100 weeks and keeps her well on target to do this very tough challenge.

Ian & Revis Crowle travelled to Dorking in Surrey to take on the Bacchus Half Marathon mainly around England's biggest vineyard Denbies Wine Estate. This was a tough challenge with sections run on the Pilgrims Way and North Downs way. For the runners an additional hazard was a swarm of wasps in a wooded section that stung several of the runners. Their pain was eased slightly by the wine samples available at the water stations. Ian & Revis finished together in 2h 20m 43 secs.

Sunday 9th September 2018 saw round 2 of the Cornwall Multi Terrain Series – the Bude Pirate Run – starting from Tommy Jacks Beach Hotel Bude. This 8.2 mile race is a hard test for off road runners with a very steep hill to challenge competitors. Nine Harriers made the trip.

Ben Harding in fine form was first Harrier home in 1h 9 min 51 secs. Rob Pick 1h 12m 33 secs was 2nd Harrier in 1st in his Male Vet 60 age group. Michael Egginton had a fine run to finish as 3rd Harrier in 1h 14m 2 secs. Amy Williams back from her Snowdon Man v. Mountain Race finished in 1h 18m 9 secs and a very fine 3rd in FV35 age group/ Meeta Nicholls was 2nd female Harrier in 1h 23m 52 secs. Simon Long 1h30m 3 secs just headed Liz Egginton 1h 31m 50 secs. Louise Littlewood 1h 33m 33 secs was next home and Mary Mullarkey 1h 45m 33 secs was 3rd in her FV 65 age category.
