EAST CORNWALL HARRIERS RACE REPORT 31ST MARCH 2019.

On Sunday 31st March 2019 it was the first running of a new 10k race to replace the much missed 5 Tors Race which was lost when permission was withdrawn for Bodmin Moor to be used for the race.

East Cornwall Harriers are proud to present a new 10k race for the Cornish running community calendar. Building upon the success of the ever popular Cornish Marathon, the team at ECH have developed a totally new multi-terrain event. We are calling the event Trepolpen Seythin in recognition of the mix of village (Tre), coast (Pol) and hills (Pen) included in the event which is based at the Seaton Countryside Park. The name of the village in Cornish is ‘Seythin’.

170 Runners lined up for the start at the Southern end of the countryside Park and headed North on the park trail before turning to cross the road to Hessenford and heading up hill through the woods – looping around and descending back into Seaton before climbing the long hill towards Narkurs. The runners then looped back down towards Downderry – joining the beach for the final leg to the finish on the beach at Seaton. Race HQ was at the Smugglers Inn by kind permission of the owners. On a glorious sunny day the competitors set off at a fast pace with 28 Harriers in the field.

The race was won by Nick Lowendahl from St Austell Running Club in 39m 38secs a brilliant time on this course. 1st lady was Sherrie Hair from Honiton Running Club in 44m 55 secs.

1 st Harrier 3rd overall and 1st MV 40 in 40.40 was Doug Stacey. Mark Davidson in 43.01 was 1st MV50. David Philp 45.34 was 3rd MV55. Chris Ullman 45.47 was 2nd MV 45 just 11 secs ahead of Matt Davies 45.58. Cadan Crowle 46.47 was just 59 seconds ahead of brother Arron Crowle.

Jenny Nash had an amazing run to be 2nd lady and 1st FV 55 in 48.06. Very very close on Jennys heels was Kaye Patterson in 48.12 and 1st lady U35 – an excellent race. The ever consistent Joe Kearns 49.31 was next home ahead of Laurie Thrift 50.09 who was a brilliant 1st in his MV65 age group. Martin Nicholls 50.29 was next just ahead of the fast finishing Hayley Stacey 51.12 a very fine 3rd in her FV40 age group. Emily Young 51.54 a great run to be 1st FV45. A fast finishing trio of Harriers within a few seconds of each other , Simon Long 52.44, Michael Egginton 52.52 and Chris Nottle 53.00 . Danni Brace 53.18 was next home and a very fine 2nd FU35.

Louise Littlewood 56.53 had a solid performance finishing just ahead of Craig Jamieson 57.34. Rhian Moxham 1.02.16 pipped Michael Plamer 1.02.45 by just 25 seconds. Micahel was 3rd in his NV70 age group. Steve Walsh 1.03.38 was next home in front of increasingly quick Liz Egginton 1.05.34. Mary Mullarkey 1.06.12 was next and 2nd in her FV70 age group just ahead of Steve Beazley 1.09.39. Charlotte Bunt 1.12.25 just edged Dave Lean 1.13.12 who ran with his partner from Looe Pioneers to post an equal time.

Kim Crowle the physiotherapist and friend & saviour of many local runners chose this race to be her maiden outing to our world of pain – and did very well to finish in 1.11.36.

The after race celebrations and presentations were carried in in a holiday mood with Harriers picking up 1st Male Team Dog Stacey, Mark Davidson Dave Philp and Chris Ullman and also 2nd Male Team with Matt Davies, Cadan Crowle , Arron Crowle and Joe Kearns and also 3rd male team of Laurie Thrift, Martin Nicholls and Simon Long and Mike Egginton.

First female team was ECH Ladies Jenny Nash, Kaye Patterson, Hayley Stacey and Emily Young. A very fine enjoyable race for runners and all supporters.

Saturday 30 March 2019 saw much travelled Marc Smerdon at the Driftwood Spar Inn at Trevaunance Cove to again tackle the KVK vertical kilometre. 1000 metres of climbing over two 7.5mile circuits. A race not for the faint hearted where the technically difficult descents can take their toll on athletes legs. Amazingly 135 solo finishers completed the challenge. Jordan Clay was first home in a frighteningly quick 1.41.58 with Alex Marples and Wayne Sarah finishing in 1.54.31 and 1.54.34. Marc was next home in 1.55.00- a superb effort.
