HARRIERS RACE REPORT 3 JUNE 2019

04 June 2019

EAST CORNWALL HARRIERS RACE REPORT 3 JUNE 2019.

Harriers Discover Dartmoor Success.

Main event of the weekend was the longest single loop UK Ultra Marathon, the Dartmoor Discovery a 32.2 mile race over the steep undulating hills of Dartmoor – starting and finishing at the Plume of Feathers Pub at Princetown on Saturady 1st June 2019.

The race is hosted by Teignbridge Trotters who as usual put on a brilliant event with copious food and feeding stations.

For one Harrier this was indeed a very special event. Sharon Daw was running her 300th Marathon and for this event carried the 300 race number. Ten fellow Harriers also entered this very popular but tough event – made that bit harder by being a very hot day.

Four ladies and seven male Harriers started the race and what a brilliant day it turned out to be. Long distance specialist, Diane Roy 4.57.19 was 3 female overall and 1st in her age category, Ladies Captain Kaye Patterson 5.17.40 was 2nd in her age category and Sharon Daw 5.39.24 was 1st in her age category. The resolute Rachael Young 6.30.00 completed the field. Sharon, Di and Kaye won the ladies Team Shield and a special award was given to Sharon for her 300th Marathon, thus joining the World Rankings for Marathon performances. Included in her 300 races were many Ultra Marathons which means overall Sharon has completed over 8000 miles of long distance races in addition to her very many shorter distance races.

The male Harriers did really well claiming 3rd Team and 11th team.

The first three Harriers home were Ian Trice 4.43.49 and 2nd in his age category. Dave Philp 4.50.42 also 2nd in his age category and Pat Munn 4.53.45. to gain the third team trophy.

Next home was Clive Shute 5.37.22 , CraigVaughnley 6.04.01 in his first Ultra Marathon and Mark Andrews – completing his 10th Dartmoor Discovery race in 6.22.13 for 11 th team.

A very fine Harriers showing in a very competitive Ultra Marathon race with many big clubs represented. As usual Teignbridge Trotters hosting was impeccable with everyone happy after a gruelling race.

On Sunday 2nd June it was the Burrator 10k race just outside Plymouth. Five Harriers attended.

1st Harrier was Darren Harvey in an excellent 39.28 and 2nd in his age group. Lucy Oldham 52.28 was next home , 7th in her age group with a brilliant new well earned personal best time. Helen Morse 59.11 was next just ahead of Nikki Pritchard 1.00.25. Ann Kinahan had a strong race to finish in 1.05.46. and 4th in her age group.

Meanwhile over in Canada Jim and Jayne Lockyer were racing in the Whistler Half Marathon. Jayne finished in a superb 1.47.00 and 1st in her age group – winning some Canadian Silverware to bring home and Jim finished in a very fine 2.01.40. Excellent to show some Cornish Black & Gold in Canada.
