EAST CORNWALL HARRIERS RACE REPORT 11 AUGUST 2019.

Saturday 10 August 2019 was one of the highlight running festivals for off road running in Cornwall – the Roseland August Trail Races – known as the RAT races – hosted and brilliantly organised by Mud Crew Events. The weekend includes 5 races of different lengths including two ultra marathon distances.

The races are run on the South West Coast path between Porthpean and St Anthony's Head a distance of 32 miles with the toughest event called The Plague being an out and back total of 64 miles on very hilly coastal trails with steep ascents and descents and a few short road excursions through villages.

The Plague starts at 12.05 am in the dark – to add to the immense toughness of this race. There are cut off times on all the different stages as this is a race not a walk. The different races join the route at different points, all terminating at Porthpean Outdoor Leisure Centre. The race is very professionally organised with marshalls and feeding and drinking stations all along the route as well as brilliant support and encouragement.

Rachel Young took on the 100 km challenge of the Plague and set off at 12.05 am. Despite some doubts and worries about her shortened training schedule she got stuck in to the task in hand and produced an outstanding personal gritty performance showing real courage and determination to finish in 18h 43m a fabulous performance.

In the Black Rat Race – competitors are transported from Porthpean to St Anthony's Head to start their race back to Porthpean at 8.30 am over the 50 km – 32 mile ultra marathon distance. The ever consistent Dave Philp completed the course in a brilliant 5h 45m. In 12th place. Hayley Stacey and Mel Handford running together had fabulous race coming in in7h 2 m joint 7th lady finishers.. Considering the terrain superb times.

Meeta Nicholls took on the Red Rat - 20 miles of the course and finished in an excellent 4h 19 m. Tracey Davey ran the White Rat 11 miles of the route and finished a fast 2h 29 m.

Considering the awful weather conditions which meant the runners were constantly battling the wind and rain that was so bad that other events were cancelled they all deserve massive congratulations for their efforts.

In other parts of the country Sharon Daw was quietly clocking up more Marathon Miles and proudly carrying the Gold and Black vest of East Cornwall Harriers. With 320 Marathons now fast approaching – Saturday 4th August was the Vanguard Way Marathon at Croydon, a hilly trail race that Sharon completed in 4h 55m and was 3rd Lady Finisher.

Saturday 10 August 2019 a Phoenix Running Marathon – called One Run to Find Them, on a very hilly lapped course through the Denbies Wine Estate and an excellent 2nd lady finisher in 4h 57m.

11 August at the Woking Waterside Centre the very aptly name Run Forresr Run marathon. Sharon's 3rd Marathon in 8 days and an an excellent 4h 37m. 7th overall and 2nd lady. Another great weeks work.
