Cornish Marathon 2019 - Marshals

03 September 2019
Written by: ROB PICK

Today is 3rd of September. The significance of this is that it is now only 2 months until the most important day in the ECH calendar – the Cornish Marathon.

The Cornish Marathon is our flagship event and the state of our club can in many ways be measured by the success of the event.

Our Race Director, Louise Harding, has already been working hard for several months (assisted by treasurer Tess Mason and IT guru Chris Ullman) and as you may know the race is fully sold out – this is a fantastic indication of how highly the event is rated by the running community both locally and indeed nationally.

However, the day can only be a success if everyone in the club takes their own share of the burden. Louise will need many helpers on the day at the Millennium centre in Pensilva, but the key to making it a great day is always Marshals.

For many years our club President, Mark Andrews, has taken on the huge task of coordinating the marshals, but he is now taking a well-earned rest and I have taken it on.

We need at least 70 Marshals to effectively and safely manage the runners on the day.

I am therefore asking that every member of the club confirm to me that they can make themselves available to help out.

The only valid excuse for not doing so is if you are actually running. Even then it is your responsibility to get a friend or relation to do it on your behalf – they will not only be able to support you but also every other runner and your club as a whole.

There are more than 30 locations where Marshals are needed, with many of them needing a few people to work as a team. Why not get a group of friends to do this and have a fun day together.

You can either do any early stint or a later one depending where on the course you are, or you can do both.

Please let me know as soon as you can that you are available – first come first served for the best places.

Anyone who hasn’t contacted me within a couple of weeks will get a call from me as a chase up. Remember it isn’t a chore, it’s a fun and enjoyable way to spend a few hours. The reward will be the thanks from the runners, your club – and a pasty back at race HQ !

Thanks all in advance.
