Virtual London Marathon

07 October 2020

ECH Report for 4th October 2020.

A very difficult year for everyone so far and a very different London Marathon.

It would be impossible to replicate the atmosphere of a normal London Marathon with the crowds – the course the music and the support from the crowds and full credit to the organisers for establishing something new to replace the actual event and so allow the entrants to run the 40th London Marathon.

An actual race did take place for all the elite athletes in every category. Running with the Elite males was Dan Nash who after leaving to go to Cardiff University now lives there and runs for Cardiff AC. Jenny & Pete Nash will have been bursting with pride to see him competing at the highest level and he produced the result with a brilliant 2h 20 min finish.

For other Harriers they had to run a virtual London Marathon on a course of their choosing but still competing the full 26.2 miles. The training and build up was just the same as for the any marathon but the difference was having to choose their own course and the Cornish October weather had a final say with last minute changes having to be made again.

Oliver Jones last year was firmly putting his name in the Guinness World records for the fastest London Marathon run in full Scout Uniform this year it was thirteen 2 mile laps around part of the Cornish Marathon Course at Pensilva. With Craig Vaughnley. Oli added another challenge adding press ups at the end of each lap increasing by one for every lap. Oli's time was 4,51.42 and Craigs 4.54.14. For the whole marathon the weather was appalling with torrential rain and a biting wind.

For Clive Shute again running for the Roy Castle Foundation his chosen course was the Camel Trail from Dunmere Halt. Clive ignored the weather and ran a brilliant 3.52.07 as well as again raising money. Gail Cory also chose the Camel Trail and recorded a fine 5.21.40 in the awful conditions.

Nikki Pritchard, Lyndsey Saunders & Sarah Steed chose a tough route around Liskeard after their initial route around Siblyback was closed by South west lakes due to unsafe conditions. They persevered throughout and completed their 26.2 miles in fine spirits although completely soaked . Recording 7.55, 7.51 and 8.03.

Ben Harding chose his own route taking in as many hills as he could around Liskeard and also picked up some local support from Harriers to help him on his way.

Matthew Loughrey Robinson completed his race in 7h 33m and Chris Nottle in an excellent 4.07 .

Sharon Daw on Marathon nr 356 recorded 5.13 and on a previous marathon a few weeks ago has already qualified for London 2021.

There are some Harriers who were unable to run the 2020 race who are already entered for 2021.

Many thanks to all the Harriers who came out and ran with and supported their team mates which was a massive boost to the runners.

Sorry if I have missed anyone but not all the results have been posted yet.
